Title/Topic: Comparing Similes and Metaphors
Grade Level: 6th
Essential/Guiding Questions:
• What is the purpose of similes and metaphors?
• What is the difference between a simile and metaphor?
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the purpose of similes and metaphors.
2. Students will be able to distinguish between a simile and metaphor using
definitions and examples.
Supplemental Activities:
• Students will work with partners or small groups to brainstorm metaphors and
similes using mind maps. On their mind maps, students will first identify the key
features of a simile and a metaphor to aid in understanding and organization.
Then, they will write 5-10 examples for each figure of speech.
• Students will write a one-page story using three similes and/or metaphors. If they
have access to a computer, students may research online to choose a theme for
their story or search for examples.
