Goal #2:  Curriculum Development

The beginning teacher is able to engage in long range planning and curriculum development and evaluation based upon district, state and national performance standards.

To demonstrate my ability to engage in long range planning, I am submitting one artifact: Family Photo Album.

The Family Photo Album is a project from the unit Entre Familia.  In this unit, students learned how to describe family relationships and people.  This project culminates everything the students have learned to this point:  introducing and describing people (physical descriptions, age and origin), their likes and dislikes and family relationships.  This project shows how students were able to apply all the skills they had developed throughout the school year in Spanish I.  Students were to include five members of their family as well as themselves and write a short paragraph answering the following questions:  Who is this person? What is his/her relationship to you?  How old is this person?  What is he/she like? Where is s/he from?  What are some of his/her likes/dislikes?

This artifact demonstrates my ability to engage in long range planning because students would not have been able to successfully complete the assignment without the prior knowledge needed to complete it.  Students successful performance displayed that they were able to communicate effectively at a novice level according to the National Standards set in place by ACTFL.  This artifact also built an understanding of classroom community and how it extends to the family.  In this unit we discussed the role of god-parents in Hispanic families and the relationships between parents and god-parents.  We compared their roles in Hispanic families to the roles that god-parents have in American families.

This project demonstrates the national standards for foreign language learning and the Missouri Show-Me-Standards.  The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) has 5 standards, Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities.  This project meets several of the standards that ACTFL defines:  Communication 1.2 and 1.3, Culture 2.1, Connections 3.1 and 3.2, Comparisons 4.2, and Communities 5.1 and 5.2.  This project meets the performance standards as outlined by the Missouri Show-Me-Standards: Goal 1.1, 1.2, 1.6, 1.10, Goal 2.1 and Goal 4.5.
